wonder book for teens- Book Reviews by ZenParent

‘Wonder’  is a novel written by R. J. Palacio. It was published in 2012 and has the distinction of being on the New York Best sellers list for 141 weeks. Interestingly, ‘Wonder’ is the first novel by this American author who used to design book jackets for a career.

The story is about a 10 year old boy August (Auggie) Pullman who is born with severe facial deformities. After being home schooled for a while, his parents make the decision to enroll him in public school. After a reluctant start, Auggie manages to make a couple of friends. His journey through the school year with its ups and downs , the trials and tribulations of being the odd one out and overcoming all of these to establish friendships and being accepted is what the story is about.

Plus:  Wonder is a wonderfully written book that is funny and sad in parts. One’s heart goes out to Auggie about how being obviously different is hard on a little child. The heart warming part of the book is Auggie’s family who are  bright, cheerful and funny- it makes one think that no matter what life throws at you, it is how you treat it that matters in the end. The story is narrated from the points of view of different characters, not just the central one, making it an interesting and engaging read. The book has won many awards including the Mark Twain Award 2015.

ZenParent Says: This book is recommended for Ages 11 and above. An inspiring, positive uplifting book with strong values, Wonder is a “must read” for your middle schooler.
