The following is a list of books that have been New York Times’ bestsellers for a long time. How many of these has your child read?

1. THE ONE AND ONLY IVAN, by Katherine Applegate  (Ages 8-12)

Reading recommendation for 8-12 year olds

A touching story about how a gorilla living in a mall(!) becomes friends with an elephant. This book has been inspired by the true story of a captive gorilla called Ivan.

2. ESCAPE FROM MR. LEMONCELLO’S LIBRARY, by Chris Grabenstein  (Ages 9-12)

Reading recommendations for 9-12 year olds

A dozen 12-year olds, an eccentric billionaire, a futuristic library, lots of puzzles and a grand prize! What’s not to like?!

3. I AM MALALA, by Malala Yousafzai with Patricia McCormick (Ages 12-16)

Reading recommendations for tweens and teens

The Pakistani girl who risked her life for education and won the Nobel Peace Prize. A good book to talk to older kids on how most of us take our freedom for granted.

4. BROWN GIRL DREAMING, by Jacqueline Woodson (Ages 10-16)

Reading recommendations for 10-16 year olds

A great book to introduce the joys of poetry to your not-so-young child. Deals with multiple themes like childhood, nostalgia, family, joy and coming-of-age. This is definitely a must-buy for all poets, young and old.
