“A mouse walked down a deep dark wood.

A fox saw the mouse and the mouse looked good.”

So begins the endearing tale of a clever little mouse and a creature he creates, the “Gruffalo” to scare off his predators. Like The Gruffalo, each of Julia Donaldson’s books has a clever mix of perfect rhymes and multiple repetitions that early readers never tire of. My 3 year old who can’t read yet has so keenly absorbed the stories that he can repeat them as if he’s reading them.

Very unlike the moral-heavy folklore available for the age group, Julia Donaldson books are fun for adults reading them loud, and children being engaged by them so much so, that surely this is the Wheels on the bus of preschool years. The titles are diverse, the artwork engaging and the stories endearing.
