Avocado Coconut Chutney

  1. Avocado – 1 large pitted and scooped
  2. Coconut – ½ cup, grated
  3. Assorted herbs (optional) – pudina/coriander/curry leaves – ¼ cup
  4. Green chilies (adjust) – 2 large
  5. Oil – ½ tsp
  6. Mustard seeds – ¼ tsp
  7. Urad dal – ¼ tsp
  8. Asafetida – a pinch


  1. Grind together ingredients 1-4 with some water to make a chutney texture paste.
  2. In a small seasoning pan, heat the oil and temper ingredients 6-8.
  3. Top over chutney and serve with main dish of choice.


Avocados are chock-full of healthy mono-unsaturated fats. All of its fats are good fats – oleic acid and this makes it an excellent choice to give babies and growing kids on a regular basis. The only issue is that it is super creamy and bland – a texture most kids aren’t fond of. Parents have often asked me for ways to disguise avocado into normal dishes so that their kids will eat them. Here is one such recipe – avocado coconut chutney – great with idlis/dosas/rotis or even as a sandwich spread.

Note: Did you know that it is the blackish colour of the peel which determines that the fruit is fully ripe?
