You finally broke the ‘big’ news and are waiting for that pregnancy glow to kick in? Well, while this is justified, by all means, turns out that pregnancy does not mean all things bright and beautiful. Apart from your breasts becoming like huge melons and your nipples screaming ‘touch me not’, there are a lot of other changes you need to brace yourself for!

One of the main changes that happen during the ‘blissful’ nine months is pigmentation. While you might be expecting to glow like Kareena Kapoor, your skin has other plans! Many Indian women battle pigmentation during pregnancy and this, in fact, can also have psychological effects.

What is pigmentation?

Pigmentation is the darkening of the skin which can be caused during pregnancy or by exposure to heat. Darkening of the skin under the eyes, nose, upper lip, cheeks and forehead, is common during pregnancy. Medically known as chloasma or melasma gravidarum, this condition is fairly more pronounced in women who have dark skin. That said, over exposure to the sun is also a cause for pigmentation. Apart from the linea nigra, the line that appears on the abdomen when your skin stretches, other sensitive areas of the body like the genitals and nipples also tend to appear darker than usual. While these patches may disappear with time for some women, it may stay longer for a few others.

Causes of pigmentation during pregnancy

If you are worried that improper skin care is the cause for pigmentation, you may be wrong! Pigmentation during pregnancy can be caused due to

Remedies for pigmentation

Every woman expects that pregnancy glow and pigmentation is definitely not something she would want to embrace. Plus with parlour treatments being out of the question when you are pregnant, you can always try these harmless natural remedies which will help you restore that pregnancy glow!

1. Potato

Potato can do wonders to your skin when rubbed over the pigmented areas. So apart from satiating your craving for peppered fries, cut out a small piece of potato and gently rub it over your skin. You will see the difference!

2. Mint

Make a paste of mint leaves and apply the mask over affected areas. Wash it off after 15 minutes. Repeat twice or thrice a week for best results!

3. Papaya and yogurt facemask

If you desperately want a facial, here’s what you can do. Mash papaya, add a few drops of honey and yogurt and mix well. Apply a thick layer on the skin and wash off after 30 minutes. Papaya helps to break down the dead skin cells and treat pigmentation, while yogurt restores moisture.

4. Almonds

Almonds are good not just for your baby’s brain, but for your skin too. Make a paste of almond and honey and apply it on the pigmented area. Wash off after 15 minutes.

5. Milk

The age old remedy for healthy skin, milk is also good for treating pigmented skin. Add a pinch of turmeric powder, honey and fuller’s earth, make a paste and apply it generously. Wash after the pack dries up.
