List of Foods to Avoid During Pregnancy

When pregnant one must keep a close watch on what one eats and what one does not. People all around would be giving you advice and it is all getting too confusing. Do not worry here is a list of foods to avoid during pregnancy.

  1. Undercooked meat could have the parasite ‘toxoplasma’ which poses a serious risk to the baby.
  2. Undercooked eggs may contain salmonella bacteria which could cause vomiting and diarrhoea
  3. Unpasteurized dairy products could lead to severe food poisoning
  4. Soft cheeses may contain listeria bacteria which could cause miscarriage, premature birth or birth defects.
  5. Certain nuts that cause allergies skin rashes, etc. This can be very uncomfortable.
  6. Raw sprouts as bacteria could enter the seeds before they begin to grow and washing them out is next to impossible.
  7. Unwashed fruits/ vegetables as the parasite ‘toxoplasma’ could be living on the surface and could be very dangerous for the baby.
  8. Restaurant-made salads as the quality of fruits, vegetables, meat, etc. used is not clear and could harbour bacteria.
  9. Unripe/ Semi ripe Papaya/ green papaya contains high levels of latex which could induce marked uterine contractions.
  10. Unpasteurized milk is not safe as it might contain listeria bacteria. This could be dangerous for you and the baby.
  11. Caffeinated drinks are stimulants that raise the heart rate and blood pressure. It causes insomnia and heartburn.
  12. Fresh juices may contain harmful E.coli and Salmonella bacteria, these could have an adverse effect on you and the baby.
  13. Alcohol consumption during pregnancy could lead to serious birth defects.
  14. Cake batter/ cookie dough contains raw eggs and even a taste of it could be risky.
  15. Canned food as the lining could contain BPA (Bisphenol A) which affects the foetal endocrine activities and also being stored for such long periods they are more likely to be bacteria infected.
  16. Food made from maida can cause acidity and increase water retention in the body.
  17. Food with high fat content increase cholesterol levels making you prone to heart disease and obesity.
  18. Sugar-rich food increases the sugar levels in your body which is not good for the baby.
  19. Street food are extremely unhygienic and can cause food poisoning, stomach upset, etc which is why they make it to the list of foods to avoid during pregnancy.
  20. Artificial sweeteners are not filtered by the placenta and thus enter the baby’s tissues too which could be harmful.
  21. Herbal tea/ supplements – Tea made from herbs like tulsi etc are best avoided as their effects on the baby are not clear.
  22. Nutmeg (jayaphal) consumption in large amounts could be detrimental to the pregnant woman and therefore should be avoided during pregnancy.
  23. Excess vitamins could cause harm or damage to the embryo.
  24. Buffet/ Picnic food left out at room temperatures beyond 2 hours is best not consumed.
  25. Leftovers have a higher risk of being infected by bacteria and thus are best avoided.
