If you’re a new dad, here’s how to cope

The immense focus and attention on the new life and the new mom, the flurry of activities and your shaken confidence on being able to handle this whole ball game of fatherhood can be tough for you, a new dad!

Relax! Take a deep breath; you are going to be alright.

  1. Fatherhood can be overwhelming; do not expect everything to fall in place on day one itself.
  2. At the same time standing on the sidelines and being a spectator will be of no help. Be hands on with the baby – take your turns at diaper changes, staying awake in the nights, etc.
  3. Hold your baby (do not worry you can hold her alright without dropping her!) or spend time stroking her gently. The added skin-to-skin time will help you
  4. Your biggest support through this is your partner so ensure you are also there for her. Be extra patient, attentive and supportive of her as she too sorts out her emotions and feelings about motherhood. Take turns to take care of the baby and also take care of yourselves!
  5. Read up about parenting and kids. If you have any questions or concerns ask your paediatrician. The more you know, the better equipped you will be to handle the baby and the challenges that come your way.
  6. Try and meet up with other ‘new dads’ like you. Having a group of men who are experiencing the same things as you can help you share experiences and advice!
