What is Hyperemesis Gravidarum or extreme morning sickness?

While morning sickness is quite common and does not usually affect your baby, some women suffer with hyperemesis gravidarum – severe vomiting and morning sickness that could mean that you’re not even able to keep down enough food to give you and your baby enough nutrition. This could cause dehydration, weight loss and may affect your baby too.

This condition can be diagnosed early in pregnancy and requires prompt medical attention. The sooner you get treated, the better the chance are, of preventing you from getting very sick. Also, you may find that medical attention can alleviate your symptoms quicker.

What can you do if you have extreme morning sickness or Hyperemesis Gravidarum?

If necessary, your doctor may ask you to undergo blood and urine tests to determine other possible causes for your sickness. If it’s hard for you to keep any food down, your doctor can prescribe meds which are safe for your baby.

In extreme cases, you may need to be hospitalized, especially if your baby isn’t receiving the nutrition that it needs in your womb. You will get the fluids, minerals and essential vitamins through an IV.

Remedies to deal with Hyperemesis Gravidarum

Here are some simple remedies to try to help alleviate pregnancy sickness before rushing to the doctor –

  • Have your breakfast in bed before you actually start your day.
  • Eat many small meals a day and avoid having an empty tummy.
  • Include protein such as well done eggs, dairy, meats, beans, grains, pulses and seeds.
  • Keep away from heavy and oily foods.
  • Have ground jeera handy; It usually helps fight nausea.
  • If you’re able to figure out your triggers, avoid them.
  • Drink plenty of water and other fluids between meals instead of during meals. Smaller sips throughout the day is a better idea than gulping down a whole lot.
  • Ginger juice mixed with honey is a great home remedy to try every morning. Try adding wedges of lemon to improve the taste of water.
