Hospital bag for delivery: What goes into it

Welcome to the Third Trimester! Yup, it definitely deserves the title case. It’s high time you start packing up your hospital bag for delivery, irrespective of whether the trip to the hospital is planned or not. You don’t want to be caught unawares now, do you?!

Keeping your maternity bag ready is important and never too early. You’ll need a lot of things not just for you but also for the baby. So, let’s get organized and divide your hospital bag into three categories:

  • Pre-birth
  • Post-birth
  • For the baby

Pre-birth items to go into the pregnancy hospital bag

You need to pack the following items in your bag on your trip to hospital for delivery:

  • Case papers: If your regular doctor is not available, the set of papers will guide the other doctors about your medical history and everything they need to know about this pregnancy
  • Regular medication: if you are taking regular medication other than what was prescribed during your pregnancy, do not forget to take it
  • A couple of front open nightgowns, or shirts or tops, and comfortable pants for better breastfeeding.
  • A Dressing gown which will come handy if you end up walking in the hospital corridors in early labour. You’ll also need one in the postnatal ward. Choose a dark coloured or patterned gown which can hide any stains.
  • Toiletries: toothbrush, soap, any makeup, comb, hairbands, scrunchies to hold back your hair
  • A pair of comfortable slippers (if it is cold outside, also carry two pairs of woolen socks)
  • Massage oil or lotion if you would like to be massaged during your labour. Also, oil or lotion to apply on your bump and breasts before labor and after delivery
  • Some Lip balm. Your lips can dry out quickly in a warm labour ward.
  • Things to help you relax or pass the time like books, music or a tablet
  • Extra Pillows. You might need your own pillow to make you extra comfortable. The hospital might not have enough to make you really comfortable.
  • Mobile phone and charger. You’ll be getting lots of phone calls from friends and family.
  • Handycam and camera to record every moment with your new arrival

Postpartum items to go into the maternity bag

Don’t forget to add the following items in your bag for your trip back home:

  • A going home outfit: Remember, you are not going back to the pre-pregnancy size. Pack something loose-fitting, yet elegant.
  • Nursing bras.
  • If you have had a normal delivery, and spoken to the doctor, carry an abdominal belt to help push the post-pregnancy tummy back in shape.
  • Maternity/sanitary pads
  • Comfortable panties, preferably big ones so that they can go over your stitches in case you have a cesarean.

Baby items to go into the baby hospital bag

Don’t forget, you are not leaving the hospital alone – You are carrying your little bundle of joy with you! These are some of the things you’ll need to carry for your baby.

  • Four sets of baby’s clothes (depending on the season): pack some sweaters and woolens if it is winter.
  • Vests or onesies to wear in summer
  • Baby blanket
  • Nappies or a set of diapers
  • Wet wipes and changing mat
  • A soft towel
  • Baby toiletries – baby powder, baby soap, baby lotion/cream.
