How to get relief from pregnancy acidity and heartburn quickly and naturally

Heartburn is a very common problem during pregnancy. It becomes worse during the second and third trimester. You can take antacids during pregnancy but there are other more natural ways to deal with pregnancy indigestion too. So how do you cure heartburn when you are pregnant?

1. Eat small, frequent meals

Instead of having three large meals a day, have five or six smaller meals through the day. This takes care of your calorie requirements during pregnancy while also making sure that you do not put excess pressure on your stomach, which may cause an overproduction of acids.

2. Drink plenty of water

It is very important to stay hydrated during pregnancy and heartburn can also be tackled by drinking a lot of water. However, make sure you drink water between meals and not during a meal.

3. Eat slow and not immediately before bed

Take time to properly chew your food before you swallow it and eat slow. Eating too fast can cause acidity. Also, don’t eat immediately before bed. Give at least 2 to 3 hours between a meal and your bedtime in order to allow the stomach to digest the food properly.

4. Rules for sleeping

Try taking a walk before you go to bed in order to get your stomach working for digestion. When you go to bed, make sure you use a pillow to keep your head and shoulders at a level higher than the rest of your body.

5. Avoid triggers

In general, avoid deep-fried, oily and fatty foods that can cause acidity even during regular times. Keep a close eye on what you eat, some pregnant women can take spicy food without problems during pregnancy while for others, spicy food causes a bad case of acidity. Caffeine, chocolate and limes/lemons can also cause acidity so note down your triggers and avoid them during the pregnancy.

Home Remedies

You can take antacids during pregnancy. However, some women prefer natural, home remedies to deal with pregnancy heartburn.

1. Ginger

Ginger is an excellent home remedy for acidity during pregnancy. Simply boil a few pieces of ginger in some water, cool it, strain and drink the water. Do this 15-20 minutes before meal times to regulate stomach acid levels and to prevent heartburn.

2. Apple cider vinegar

Apple cider vinegar is a very good remedy against acidity as well as nausea and headaches. Take two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar in a glass and top it up with water. Add a teaspoon of honey if you don’t like the taste. Drink this twice a day to get rid of pregnancy acidity.

3. Lemon

Add the juice of a lemon to a glass of water and mix a teaspoon of honey. Lemon aids in the production of digestive juices that balance stomach acids and help prevent indigestion.

4. Yogurt or Milk

Cold milk and yogurt can soothe heartburn very quickly. Cow’s milk, goat’s milk and even nut milks are excellent remedies for pregnancy heartburn.

5. Coconut water

You can also drink some coconut water to get relief from heartburn symptoms. The water of a tender coconut is an excellent natural acid neutraliser, and can give immediate relief.
