You’re in your final throes of pregnancy and you know you have the healthy diet after you give birth coming up, and you have a lot of cravings. You get hungrier, and you keep wanting to eat all the time. But remember, what you eat is very important at this time, especially because heartburn can be quite frustrating.

As the pregnancy advances and your uterus grows larger, the stomach is pushed up against the diaphragm which is causing the stomach contents to be moved up the oesophagus. This can cause acid reflux which can cause serious heartburn. This is quite common; you will want to ease it though. Here is what you can try to soothe that unbearable heartburn

Tips to get relief for heartburn during pregnancy

1.Eat small meals

2.Eat slowly and chew your food properly

3.Drink a lot of fluids. Sip liquids between meals for some relief.

4.Do not lie down immediately after a meal, sit for sometime or take a small walk. Alongside all this is of course the fact that you avoid all trigger foods that can only worsen heartburn conditions. Foods to avoid right now would be:

1.Citrus foods – oranges, tomatoes, etc. can all bring on a burning sensation after Meals.

2.Coffee and Soda – caffeinated drinks are known to trigger heartburn so avoid them. If at all you must have a drink ensure it is never on an empty stomach

3.Alcohol – forget heartburn this is best avoided anyways

4.Fatty foods – they take longer to digest and thus tend to move back into the oesophagus.

5.Chocolates – known to trigger heartburn they should be taken in lesser quantities and never on an empty stomach.

In general it is better to focus on liquids more now as they are less likely to cause heartburn during pregnancy as they move through the stomach faster. Liquids with plenty proteins like smoothies, yoghurts, milkshakes, etc are a healthy and filling option.
