Easing Itchy Stretch Marks During Pregnancy

itchy stretch marks

As your belly grows and stretches, it is quite likely for stretch marks to make their appearance. With this stretching, the skin also begins to feel dry and itchy which can be extremely bothersome.

How to manage itchy stretch marks during pregnancy

Check with your doctor if the itching is because of any serious medical conditions in which case take prescribed medications; otherwise you can give the following a try to ease those itchy stretch marks

  • Further drying up of the skin can aggravate the itching. It is best to avoid too many hot tub baths or hot showers for the same reason.
  • Use a mild, moisturising cleansing agent to clean the area. Rinse of the lather thoroughly and pat dry with a soft towel.
  • Immediately after a bath, when the skin is still damp, use refrigerated mild unscented moisturiser (cocoa butter, shea butter, etc.) liberally to massage the areas. You could do this twice a day.
  • Avoid products which contain alcohol
  • Avoid concentrated chlorine water
  • If the climate is too dry use a humidifier to add moisture to the air
  • Wear loose breathable fabrics.
  • Avoid going out in the sun when it is really fierce
  • Cut your nails so that deep scratches do not occur. Also try and control the urge to scratch as scratching only intensifies the itching.
  • Use cold or wet compresses to soothe itchy regions of the skin.

If none of these seem to provide any substantial relief, consult your doctor for some oral or topical medication depending on the severity of the rash and itchiness.
