We humans are prone to getting anxious and the tendency just goes on overdrive during the pregnancy! To be anxious about this new life you are bringing into the world is but natural and it is not easy to deal with. You can cope with the anxiety by doing any of the following:

Tips on managing anxiety during pregnancy:

  • Discuss with your partner your anxieties. You will definitely feel much better after talking about your anxieties.
  • Discuss with your gynaecologist any specific medical conditions that are making you anxious.
  • Focus on your pregnancy and get the relevant information. It is good to know about other’s pregnancies but don’t spend too much time or energy on them (especially if it is not a smooth pregnancy) you do not want to get too worked up.
  • Get a good uninterrupted 7-8 hours of sleep in the night. Lack of sleep could increase anxiety.
  • Relax and spend time doing whatever helps you unwind. Try yoga, deep breathing or stretching exercises, reading or napping; avoid exerting yourself or over thinking anything.
  • Take a small vacation or even a day off. A rested mind and body can cope with anxiety better.
  • A healthy and well balanced diet goes a long way in helping one cope with anxiety.
  • Exercise or walking, even if for a short period of time, can help bring down anxiety levels.
  • You cannot do everything on your own and you need to come to terms with it. Build your own support system and do not shy away from seeking help from a willing family or friend.
  • Have a support group of people who are also expecting - they could be friends or a virtual group of people too!
