Do your breasts look bigger to you everyday? Possibly, they’re also likely super sensitive and tender (good to look but no touching, sweetie). As one of the most common symptoms of pregnancy, breast tenderness usually starts around week 4 to week 7 and lasts the whole of the first trimester. This doesn’t mean they stop growing at the end of the first trimester. Quite the contrary – your breasts will continue to change all through your pregnancy, ending with colostrum production – which is the precursor to breast milk – your baby’s first food after delivery. That will begin to leak around week 38.

What causes breast tenderness during pregnancy?

Thank you hormones – again! Estrogen and progesterone take the flak again. Other reasons include the (good) fat that’s building up in your breasts and the increased blood flow to the area. And why all this fuss? Because your breasts are getting ready to get milked for food in a few short months.

Changes in your breasts during pregnancy

Your nipples. You may find that your nipples are achy, tingling and even protruding a bit more than you’d like. And even though they look very desirable, they’re probably tender. So, sorry pardner!

Your areolas. The pigmented area around your nipples tend to become darker, spotted, and just bigger – this will continue.

The good news: Even though your breasts will continue to grow, they should stop aching after the first trimester. And hey, don’t fret. Once you’re done breastfeeding, they will (almost) restore to their old size.

How to ease breast tenderness

Warn your partner about your tenderness so he’s gentle during lovemaking, or even hugging. You can guide him on how to touch and what feels good.

Invest in a good bra. This is vital to prevent stretching and future sagging. Underwire bras could be uncomfortable. So please go in for a full coverage bra. If it makes you comfortable, wear a cotton sports bra to bed.
