Birth certificate in India – The procedure

Procedure to take birth certificate in India

What is a birth certificate and when should I apply for it?

A birth certificate is an important document that is a record of the date of birth of the child, issued by the Municipal Corporation in the urban areas, by the Tehsildar at the Taluka level and the Gram Panchayat in the villages. It is required for a whole lot of reasons as the child grows up – school admissions, passport applications, etc.

It is best to apply for the child’s birth certificate immediately after the child is born rather than wait for later when things can get complicated unnecessarily.

Birth certificate procedures in India: Things you should know

Here is what you need to do to obtain a birth certificate:

  1. A birth registration form is available at the hospital or Town Registrar’s office. You need to collect the same and complete the required details. The form basically captures the relevant data like – child’s name, father’s name, mother’s name, place of birth, date of birth, address, sex of the child, etc. In villages a formal document like a form may not be always available in which case the required details need to be filled out on a blank paper.
  2. The completed application form along with fee must be submitted to the local authorities. The fees may vary from region to region.
  3. The registrar of births will verify the birth at the hospital and then issue the birth certificate by mail.
  4. This is the standard procedure if the birth is registered within 21days of the event.
  5. If registered later than 21 days, the certificate is issued after due police verification. This can take a longer time.
  6. The birth certificate is ready in about 10days.
  7. There is a fast-track process to get it earlier if required.
