Ayurvedic medicines post baby: Are they effective and are they for you?

Since ancient times ayurvedic medicines or Ayurveda has been used extensively in India to ensure holistic healing. Post delivery too, Ayurveda has been used to ensure a woman recovers from the pregnancy fully.

According to Ayurveda, the first 42 days post child birth is critical for a new mother. The choices she makes now will influence her overall health and ability to mother her newborn.

Ayurveda suggests that child delivery is due to ‘Vata’ activity which increases greatly after a delivery. The digestion power, hygiene and immunity are low in a new mother and thus care should be accordingly given.

Ayurveda uses a lot of herbs and natural ingredients to make ‘kashayams’ which are supposed to be effective to balance the Vata. These kashayams are simple and use common ingredients like ghee, sesame oil, ginger, etc. These medicines help control the formation of gas in the stomach. An imbalance in ‘vata’ can cause weight gain and diseases like arthritis, etc.

Also Ayurveda recommends complete rest for the mother to recover completely. Support from family and friends can help bring back the natural strength and vitality of the mother.

The effectiveness of Ayurveda is debatable. Certain research has found the ayurvedic medicines to contain toxic metals such as lead, mercury and arsenic. Ingestion of these metals in large doses can be risky and cause life-threatening conditions. It is always advisable to discuss with your doctor the medicines, supplements, herbs, etc. that you are planning to take.

Always remember, everyone reacts differently to different kinds of treatment. If at any point in time, you feel the need to switch the medication or feel the need to stop, you can, at any time.
