39 Weeks Pregnant – Your Pregnancy Guide

Your Baby This Week – Week 39

Your baby this week - Week 39

Your baby weighs close to 7.5 lbs (3.4 kgs) and measures up to 20.5 inches (51 cms) long. However, an average healthy newborn baby can weigh anywhere between 5 lbs 11 ounces (2.5 kgs) to 8 lbs 5.75 ounces (3.8 kgs).

And it’s a full term baby! While your baby’s size is not likely to change after this, the brain is still developing at a breakneck speed (the rate will continue for the next three years).

While your baby’s lungs and vocal chords are all set to produce wails and cries, your baby’s eyes are not yet prepared to accompany those cries with tears. The tear ducts will develop after a month of birth.

If you haven’t done already, this is the best time to finalize a pediatrician for your baby so that you can get started with the immunizations at the get-go. Look for a doctor who is close to your home rather than the hospital, and is easy to talk to. Also an important consideration is one who doesn’t dose your child with too much unnecessary medication.

The Indian Academy of Pediatrics (IAP) has launched a free SMS service that sends immunization reminder to parents. To register to this service, send a text message to the national shortcode 566778 in the following format:

Immunize *space* <baby’s pet name> *space* <baby’s date of birth>

Baby’s date of birth should be in format: dd-mm-yyyy

39 Weeks Pregnant – Your Body

You are in the 39th week of pregnancy and about to meet your baby any moment now! The countdown has begun and you are probably getting knowing looks from family and friends translating as “any time now!” If you felt that your pregnancy has flown past like a breeze, then it is more likely that these last few days will drag along in anticipation. You are feeling increasingly uncomfortable now as you drag along your huge bump and your pelvis is aching more and more as your baby bears down. You may still be feeling remnants of heartburn, but this is much better now that the baby is much lower and engaged.

If you are opting for a C-section, then this would be a good time to consult your astrological charts (if you are interested). Most people of course still prefer to wait for the natural onset of labour and go for a normal delivery.
