Your baby this week – Week 37

In the 37th week of pregnancy, your baby is the size of a large muskmelon (kharbooja in Hindi), weighs close to 6.5 lbs (2.8 kgs) and measures 20 inches (50 cms) long from head to toe.

If you took a sonogram now – which you must not – you will see your baby sucking the thumb rather vigorously, practicing for the feeding sessions later. Your baby is also rolling around and squirming due to the lack of space in your tummy. Your baby’s fingers are more dexterous, ready to grab smaller objects. Most of the waxy cheesy coating that covered your baby in the uterus is gone swallowed by your baby in the tomb and stored in the bowels. These will become your baby’s third bowel movement called meconium.

As a mom, you are already passing on the antibodies that you received from your vaccines to protect your little one from germs. Your baby’s head is still growing and is almost the same size circumference as his or her hips. There are cute little dimples on your baby’s elbows and knees now, and creases and folds in the neck and wrists. Also your baby now has a full head of hair, about an inch long. Or maybe not. Also, your baby’s hair may not be the same color as yours.

Hairy or bald, no matter what, one thing’s for certain. You sure can’t wait to hold your little one in your arms!

37 Weeks Pregnant – Your Body

No one has been able to correctly determine when the baby decides to makes its entrance into the world. But your doctor will be able to make a more educated estimate of your baby’s time of arrival. In this week’s visit, your doctor will take an internal assessment of your cervix (the dilation required is 10 cms) and the cervical ripeness (the consistency of the cervix). Then your doctor will check for effacement (or how thin the cervix is) and its position. Lastly, your doctor will assess the position of the baby in relation to your pelvis (lower the baby, the more ready it is to come out). Your doctor will have also discussed the option of c-section or a cesarean delivery, in case your baby is still in breech position.

You have probably stopped gaining weight by now. In this third trimester, you have probably gained 11.5 – 13.5 kg, but that’s it. Now you don’t have to worry if you are not gaining any weight. Keep up with the oil rubbing for your stretch marks, and the stretching exercises to prepare for your delivery. Taking rest should become your Number 1 priority by now, so do what it takes for you to take rest and get some sleep. If you are still facing some heartburn or indigestion, try eating some almonds or drink a glass of warm milk mixed with a teaspoonful of honey.

Go over your list of to-do’s and prioritize the items. If some low priority items are not done yet, let them go. Your baby is not going to care about it anyway.
