17 Weeks Pregnant – Your Pregnancy Guide

Your Baby This Week – Week 17

Your baby this week - Week 17

Size of the baby: 12.7cm

Weight of the baby: 141gm

Your ‘turnip’ sized baby is growing bigger and slowly beginning to accumulate body fat. Her soft cartilage is slowly getting converted to bones and the umbilical cord is getting stronger. Her heart beat now regulated by the brain is beating at about 140-150 beats per minute, almost twice as fast as yours. She is also practising on her sucking and swallowing skills thus preparing her to suckle at either breast or bottle once she is out.

Your baby is now getting increasingly sensitive to sound. Loud noises are now going to in all probability startle her but then this will also prepare her for once she is out in the world. She can move her joints now and her sweat glands have also begun to develop.

You might begin having quite vivid and frequent dream memories now. The possible reason for that is more often than not you wake up in the REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep where one has the most dreams. Since you woke up then chances are higher that you will be able to recollect your dream.

You might want to start on that baby’s probable name list now.

17 Weeks Pregnant – Your Body

You are now in your 17th week of pregnancy! You will be starting to show any time now so be ready for a lot of knowing smiles and hearing ‘congratulations!’

This is obviously making your centre of gravity change which is taking you a little off balance. Since you will be feeling slightly unsteady it is best to avoid situations which could make you have a fall – yes so climbing heights (however little) is risky. Wearing high heels during pregnancy is risky, so you might want to switch to low heeled ones for the next few months.

Some women experience a pain in the leg, sciatic nerve pain – the growing uterus could be putting pressure on the nerve.

Trauma of any kind is not good for the baby now so do remember the seat belts most definitely when in the car.

You might feel your eyes go dry quite frequently now. You could try some lubricant drops for that. In case the discomfort persists it is best to consult a doctor. Another common thing thing which bothers a lot of women if swollen feet during pregnancy. This is called edema and occurs when body fluids increase to nurture both you and your baby and accumulate in your tissues as a result of increased blood flow.
