Your grandma wasn’t wrong! Hair care recipes from your grandma that actually work!

We all had beautiful hair when we were children. Do you why? It was because our moms and grandmoms took care of our hair. Things are different now that we do our own hair care – we have dry, damaged hair that has lost all its shine, and volume. This proves that our grandmothers’ recipes for hair care had its benefits. Here is a compilation of the age-old dadi ke nuske for hair care that really work!

1. Hot oil massage

Remember those long hours spent in hot oil massages? Those worked because a hot oil massage on your scalp improves circulation, which leads to better nourishment and therefore, healthier hair. It also lubricates the hair, thus preventing frizz and breakages.

Take coconut oil (or olive oil or almond oil) in a small bowl and put in a bigger bowl of warm water. Let the oil heat up slightly. Apply this to your scalp with a cotton ball or your fingers. Massage a little and then apply the oil to the full length of your hair. Now wrap a warm towel around your hair and let the oil soak in for about 2 hours. Wash off with shampoo.

2. Yogurt

One of your grandmom’s favourite ingredients for hair care, yogurt contains acids and nutrients that are excellent for hair growth. It also keeps hair nourished, moisturised and balances the pH balance of your scalp.

Make a yogurt hair mask with half a cup of yogurt, and a teaspoon each of honey and apple cider vinegar. Mix these to a thick paste and apply to your scalp and along the length of your hair. Leave it on for about 30 minutes and wash off with shampoo. If your hair is dry, you can add a banana to the mask, and if your hair is greasy, add some mashed strawberry.

3. Lemon

Lemon contains Vitamin C which is excellent for the health of your hair. Plus it contains antifungal properties that help in getting rid of dandruff and adds shine to dry, frizzy hair.

You can use lemon juice directly on the scalp if you have dandruff or hairfall. Or, to nourish hair, you can add a tablespoon of lemon juice to half a cup of coconut water and apply it to your scalp. You can also use it as a last rinse after a shampoo.

4. Eggs

Eggs are a rich source of protein and other compounds that make it very effective in hair care. You can mix egg yolks with olive oil or yogurt to promote hair health and to get silkier, shinier hair. You can also mix one egg with half a cup of yogurt and a tablespoon of honey to add extra nourishment to dry, damaged hair. No matter what you use, make sure you apply it to the scalp as well as along the length of hair for best results. Leave for 30 minutes to an hour and wash off carefully to get rid of the smell.

5. Amla

Amla, or Indian Gooseberry, is an excellent product for hair care. It contains Vitamin C and lots of fatty acids that help strengthen the hair follicles and maintain the pH balance of the scalp for better hair growth. To make amla powder, deseed and dry amlas in the sun for a few days. When they are completely dehydrated, grind to a powder. You can use this powder with water, olive oil or yogurt to make a hair strengthening pack that will also take care of dandruff and dry and itchy scalp.

You can also deseed the amla and grind it in a blender with some water. Pass the mixture through a muslin cloth to get amla juice that can be applied directly on the scalp or mixed with olive oil and applied to the hair to prevent premature ageing of hair.
