Vitamin E: the magic oil you need right now for your skin and hair!

Vitamin E! You’ll see the name on the best moisturisers, on the labels of hair oil bottles, and in every article about beauty and health. It contains both nutrients as well as water-soluble antioxidants which repair and rejuvenate. Find out how you can use Vitamin E on your skin as well as on your hair.

Vitamin E for your skin

1 Moisturise dry, sensitive skin

Vitamin E is excellent for those with dry or sensitive skin. You can use Vitamin E directly on your skin as a post clean-up massage, or, for better application, mix it with a carrier oil such as olive oil or coconut oil and massage this in upward circular motions on your face and body before you go to bed. However, if you are prone to breakouts anyway, it is advised that you don’t use this on your face because it is a very heavy humectant and can cause severe breakout.

2. Heal dry, sagging skin

Vitamin E contains collagen, a protein that improves skin elasticity. It is extremely good for preventing dry skin and any sagging of skin after pregnancy or weight loss. If you are over 30, definitely use Vitamin E oil on a regular basis to avoid the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines, because in the case of ageing, prevention is a great deal better than cure.

3. Heal sunburn

Vitamin E contains antioxidants that attack the effects of free radicals caused by UV radiation. To heal sunburned skin, apply Vitamin E oil directly on the affected area.

4. Lighten dark spots

Dark spots or pigmentation could be caused by a number of factors. Liver damage, pregnancy, sunburn and aging could all cause dark spots. Vitamin E contains antioxidants that attack free radicals. You can expect a visible reduction of dark spots when you apply Vitamin E mixed with a carrier oil regularly.

5. Deep cleanse your skin

Vitamin E is a heavy emollient, so when used to clean your face, it pulls out the impurities while maintaining the oil balance of your skin. Apply Vitamin E oil on your face and wipe off with a damp washcloth or cotton ball. You can also use Vitamin E oil directly on a cotton ball to clean your face.

6. Heal dry nails

Dry nails and cuticles never look good, and even when you polish them, they can make the nail polish flake off or look patchy. To heal dry nails, remove all traces of nail polish and clean your nails using a soft brush. Then apply a little Vitamin E oil on the nails and massage gently. Do this regularly.

7. Reduce stretch marks

There is very little you can do about stretch marks when you are pregnant and after delivery. One way to reduce and lighten the appearance of stretch marks is to make sure you apply Vitamin E oil directly on the stretch marks and massage in gentle circular motions. Vitamin E penetrates the layers of the skin that are stretched to form these marks and it restores skin elasticity to reduce and lighten stretch marks.

8. Soften and Lighten Lips

You can use Vitamin E oil directly on your lips to soften chapped lips and to lighten them if you have dark lips. For excessively dry lips, mix Vitamin E oil with a little honey and massage this on your lips at bedtime.

9. Treat dark circles

Mix a little Vitamin E oil into your regular moisturiser and apply under your eyes to reduce and lighten dark circles. Vitamin E releases antioxidants in the skin that tackle free radicals that cause darkening of the undereye area.

10. Soothe rough skin

The rough skin on your palms, elbows, knees and ankles can be softened with Vitamin E. Use it with olive oil and apply to the dry, rough patches. Leave on overnight and wipe off next morning with a damp cloth to get smooth, soft skin over time.

The benefits of Vitamin E extend to your hair too. Our hair requires a lot of care because it is exposed to the sun, pollution and impurities in the air every day, and if you don’t have the time for an elaborate hair care ritual, Vitamin E alone can take care of your hair.

1 Increase hair growth

Vitamin E contains antioxidants that improve circulation when applied to your scalp. This stimulates the hair roots to grow better and faster. Mix a little Vitamin E oil into warm olive oil, almond oil or coconut oil and apply on your scalp. Gently massage the entire scalp and continue applying the oil along the length of the root to heal damaged hair follicles.

2. Prevent premature greying

The antioxidants present in Vitamin E prevent corrosion of tissues, and when applied to the hair with a carrier oil such as olive oil, coconut oil or almond oil, can help reduce premature ageing of hair.

3. Repair split ends

Split ends are a major problem, and can happen due to multiple reasons. But the antioxidant properties of Vitamin E help strengthen the hair follicles and prevent split ends. Mix Vitamin E oil with some coconut oil and olive oil (and if possible, jojoba oil) and apply on your hair to get stronger, more lustrous hair.
