This simple trick will ensure your baby sleeps through the night!

Ask any new mom and she will tell what you what a luxury sleep is! Irregular sleep patterns tire out not just the mother, but also the baby. And this holds true, especially during the night.  Imagine having to handle a baby who is wide awake at night? Sounds scary right? But not anymore!

If you are sleep deprived mom, trying to set a sleep routine for your baby, we are here to help. These simple tricks will ensure your baby dozes through the night and so do you!

1.    Set a sleep routine

A sleep routine will solve most of your problems. Trying to get your baby’s sleep time consistent at each day will set a bedtime routine for your baby. Do all the sleep time activities at the same time each day. Even if your baby is in a playful mood, take him to bed and try putting him to sleep. This will establish a bedtime routine. However, this will not happen overnight and requires multiple attempts from your end.

2.    Keep her engaged through the day

As your baby grows, he becomes more active and is less likely to take frequent naps. So, keep him engaged through the day with physical and mental activities. Ensure he is awake and occupied especially during the second half of the day so that his sleep time gradually shifts to the night.

3.    Teach your baby that a bedroom is a sleeping place

Designate an area for your baby’s sleep time and make him understand that it is meant for sleeping. Very soon, your baby will start identifying with the place. Keep the lights and sound conditions in the room consistent so that even if your baby wakes up in the middle of the night, he will find everything to be the same and go back to sleep.

4.    Avoid picking your baby in the middle of the night

Do not rush to pick your baby when he cries in the middle of the night. Firstly he will not understand it is still time to sleep and secondly doing so will only disrupt his sleep. So, instead sing him a rhyme, gently pat and try soothing him back to sleep. Guiding him back to sleep without picking him will also stop him from getting playful in the middle of the night.

5.    Make the last meal a little heavy

Most of the times, babies wake up in the middle of the night, due to hunger. So, offering a heavy meal will keep his tummy full and prevent him waking up in the middle of the night. Ensure your baby eats a heavy meal before bedtime. If you have started him on solids, ensure he gets enough food to sustain through the night. If your baby is still on feed, make sure you feed him once before he dozes off.

6.    Give him a bedtime bath

A bedtime bath will help your baby relax and get in the sleep mode. Give him a warm water bath and dress him in comfortable clothing. You could also give him a massage post-bath. Make this a routine each day so that your baby associates the night bath with sleeping.

7.    Keep away all distractions

And this means ALL of it. Toys, colourful pillows, bed sheets, bright lighting, loud music etc are all serious distractions for babies. So put them all away. Set the mood in the room. Use warm lighting, melodious music, and comfortable bedding will make it easier for your baby to fall asleep.
