Prenatal Yoga benefits

Pregnancy needs women to be fit and exercise safely throughout (in case of no complications) There are numerous workouts or fitness regimes one can choose from. Yoga is a great option as it also helps to relieve stress, something which again is very common and at the same time detrimental to the health of both mother and child.

Many doctors recommend women keep up an exercise regimen during their nine month pregnancy.

“Exercise during pregnancy has been shown to maybe decrease gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, and c-section,” said Dr. Jaclyn Van Nes with UT Medical Center’s Women’s Specialty Care.

She says yoga can be a great part of an exercise program for pregnant women especially because it relieves stress.

“Finding ways to relax yourself, preparing for labor and the challenges of pregnancy, changes in the body, that sort of thing. To relieve some stress,” said prenatal yoga instructor Pamela Bradshaw.

She’s been teaching the class at UT Medical Center for almost two years. The classes are structured in sessions that are once a week for four weeks.

“It’s relaxing and it helps stretch my legs out,”said Danya Cushing who is in her second session.

Danya also supplements her classes at the hospital with YouTube videos at home. “Because I loved it. I wish it was more than once a week.”

The classes are structured a little differently than other yoga classes keeping the emphasis on mom and baby.

“For one thing the connective tissue is a whole lot looser when you’re pregnant. You don’t want to overstretch,” said Bradshaw.

The instructor also keeps baby in mind during breathing exercises and some stretches.
