It’s 2016’s breastfeeding week! Spreading awareness and encouraging more women to breastfeed in public is part of what some celebrity mothers are trying to do. Claire Rutter’s article will show you how.

World Breastfeeding Week is celebrated globally every year during the first week of August, and it’s a topic of discussion that is often thrown at celebrity mums after welcoming a baby.

Expanding the selfie craze, celebrity mums have shared their breastfeeding snaps to give an insight into their most intimate moments with their children. Liv Tyler recently shared a sweet photo feeding her latest addition, Lula, writing she was “so grateful for this precious gift.”

Actress Penelope Cruz found nursing her children was “addictive”. Speaking to Allure magazine, she said: “I was breast-feeding my son 13 months, and I plan to do the same with my daughter. [Nursing] is addictive. It’s hard when the day comes when you have to stop.” She also added: “I’m supposed to get extra calories because breastfeeding you burn, like, an extra 500 a day.”

Gisele

The Brazilian supermodel once asked for a ‘worldwide law’ to force new mums to breastfeed their baby for the first six months. She was blasted by critics for not being sympathetic to mothers unable to breastfeed.

She later clarified her comments on her blog: “My intention in making a comment about the importance of breastfeeding has nothing to do with the law. It comes from my passion and beliefs about children.”

Back in 2013, she later shared a photo of herself ‘multitasking’ by breastfeeding her daughter while her glam squad were hard at work.

Selma Blair

Speaking on sister Khloe Kardashian ’s show, Kocktails With Khloe, Kim said: “ North West stopped that for me. You’ll die when I tell you what she did. First of all she’d cry so much and try to pull him off me.

“I was feeding him on [one] side… and she was so jealous that she took her little milk box and put it in my bra with the straw sticking out and she wanted to drink while he was drinking.

“She said to me this weekend: ‘Mommy, I’m not mad anymore. You can feed baby brother and I won’t cry.’ And I was like: ‘Honey, the milk’s all dried up.’”

Khloe responded: “She knows what she’s doing.”

Mila Kunis might be a Hollywood superstar and married to another one, but even she has been shamed for public breastfeeding.

The Bad Moms star and her husband Ashton Kutcher have noticed how strangers react when she feeds her child in public.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, Kunis said: “It always made my husband and I feel a little weird. It took us a little back because people actually looked at us in a shameful [way], and we were like, ‘Oh my God,’ because it’s so not a sexual act.”

She continued: “In the States and in our culture, we sexualise the breast so much that there’s an aspect of it that people just don’t know how to wrap their head around the idea of showing your breast in public. But I respect the opinions on both sides. If it’s not for you, don’t look.”
