Fascinating trips to the national parks and planetariums have been overshadowed by weekend visits to malls and movies. But the good news is that parents are slowly realising the importance of outdoor activities for their kids. And if you stay in Bangalore, there are places galore you can go to with your kids for a cool family time!

1. Bannerghatta Biological Park: You have the option of either going to the zoo, or getting up, close, and personal with the feline species with the safari or just marvel at the wonderful flying creatures at the butterfly park! A perfect way to spend the weekend with family and friends!

2. Amusement Parks: There’s certainly no dearth of amusement and water parks in Bangalore! With a wide choice of rides – thrill, dry, and water rides to spoil both the kids and adults alike, you can have lots of fun with your family. Wonderla, FunWorld, GRS Fantasy Park, Innovative Film City, Snow City are just some of the amusement parks in town.

3. Nandi Hills: Believed to be the highest point in Bangalore and around 60 km from the city, this place is a paradise for early risers. It’s a beautiful weekend getaway with breathtaking views, a lake, Tipu Sultan’s summer palace, a 1300-year old Nandi Temple, vineyards, and a 600 metre high cliff point – Tipu Drop! 6. Lal Bagh Botanical Garden: You just can’t miss the amazing flower shows at the Lal Bagh Glass House! One of the major tourist attractions in town, and developed by Tipu Sultan, this place will mesmerise you with its massive varieties of plant species – exotic and indigenous. It’s also the perfect place for all budding gardeners in town to satiate their need for all gardening supplies, plants, seeds, etc. The Independence Day flower show is on till 16th August and will showcase a floral replica of the Bangalore Palace!

7. The Martin Farm: Started by owners – Ossie and Marie Martin, this farm is spread over two acres and here your kids can connect with different animals in a way like never before! They feed them, touch them, and learn to nurture them in the process! Fish, ducks, pigs, cows, horses, dogs, and many other animal species waiting to fascinate your kids and you!

Honey Bees Nature Club: A nature club, meant for the entire family, Honey Bees aims at developing curiosity, love, and respect for nature and importance of outdoor/adventurous activities among children. 9. Indira Gandhi Musical Fountain: This dancing and musical fountain, located opposite the Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium and spread across 17 acres, enthralls the visitors with splendid light and fountain shows every evening. Definitely worth a visit!

Hamsah Organic Farm and Sustainable Living: John Fennnesy and his wife Swetha started this 5-acre organic farm in Sulekunte in 2008, purely on the idea of sustainable alternatives for growing crops! And they do it scientifically and quite successfully without using any pesticides! Volunteers (read kids, parents, and friends) are often invited to indulge in sustainable farming from time to time! An excellent way of learning something valuable to pass on to the kids!

11. Mother Sanctuary: Another decent outdoor recreational spot off the Sarjapur Road for both parents and kids with plenty of activities such as farm tour, animal petting, tree climbing, nature walks, pottery, clay stomping and the works!

Jawaharlal Nehru Planetarium: Learn about the mysteries of the universe, planets, constellations, galaxies, nebulas, the Big Bang and other fascinating space-related theories with various shows in English and Kannada at the planetarium! Register at the club for major celestial events, workshops, and science exhibitions and before you know it, your kid will be enriching you with all the knowledge!

13. Theatre Carnivals: The works of Shakespeare, Kalidasa, Prem Chand and other great writers come alive during the various theatre festivals in Bangalore. What’s more, kids can also enroll for workshops at Ranga Shankara and Jagriti and learn the nuances of acting first hand!

The Big Banyan Tree: A major tourist attraction and a natural wonder, this 400 year old Banyan tree has a circumference of more than 250 metres, is spread over 3 acres, has more than one thousand aerial roots and is one of the largest of its kinds! A perfect picnic spot for most of the families, it’s located at Ramohalli, about 28 km from Bangalore on the Bangalore-Mysore road. Enjoy a lazy Sunday with your family here under the dense green foliage of this massive tree!
