(Based on William Shakespeare’s ‘The Merchant of Venice’)

”Today I stand in front of you as a Jew who has lost his daughter to a Christian, as a Jew whose faith is hurt by a Christian, a petty pawnbroker who has lost all he had to a Christian. I stand for judgement. Answer, shall I have it?” – Shylock.

Shylock is perhaps the most important and controversial character created by Shakespeare. For centuries he has been portrayed in various hues, from a notorious, ravenous villain to a sympathetic usurer. This production tries to look at Shylock as a person who has been wronged, as a petty pawnbroker who is left with no choice but to take his penalty. It portrays the tragedy of Shylock.
