About the Ganesh Festival in Pune

The Ganesh Festival holds a very special place in every Punekar’s heart. In Pune, the festival is celebrated in style and with a lot of faith in homes and in public places.

It was in Pune in 1894 that Lokmanya Tilak initiated the concept of the ‘Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav’ — the collective communal celebration of the festival of Lord Ganesha. Almost every neighborhood puts up a pandal with an idol of Ganesh, often amidst mythological settings (also adapting contemporary themes with social messages), complete with decorative lights and music.

There are a number of Ganesh mandals or temples Pune, but there are 5 most important idols which have specific place in the collective consciousness of people because of their history and significance. These are the मानाचे पाच (Manache Paach means Respected Five) Ganpati idols or temples in Pune. These also have the honour of being the foremost during the immersion procession (Visarjan) during Anant Chaturdashi.
