As parents, we worry about everything to do with our children. We fuss over what the eat, how they’re dressed and how they behave. One thing we tend to ignore is their oral health. Between vaccination and schools, and all over activities, oral care tends to take a back seat. Needless to say, this has very long term consequences. Recent research shows that people with poor oral hygiene are at greater risk for cardiovascular disease in their fifties.

Here are some very easy tips to keep those little pearly whites sparkling for a long time.

1. Don’t ignore the milk teeth. Sure, they fall off. But a spoiled milk tooth can spread the infection to the adult tooth underneath it as well.

2. Make it a habit to brush twice a day. Some habits are best learned young. Some people say that if you wish to brush only once, then it is better to do it in the night than in the morning!

3. Start early. Use your finger to start gently cleaning the mouth from the time the very first tooth appears. Begin using a baby toothbrush once there are at least 4-6 teeth. Remember to replace the toothbrush regularly.

4. Use a fluoride free toothpaste. Children exposed to too much flourished suffer from brittle teeth all through adulthood. Check the ingredient list on the back of the toothpaste.

5. Never ignore a toothache, even in a child. Cavities are hard to fill and a tooth once damaged is never as good as the original again.

6. Go for a dental checkup every six months. This applies to the entire family, but it is a lot more important to start early. A dental cleaning every six months is a great way of catching problems at an early age.

7. Try and avoid chewy, quartz foods for dinner. Even after brushing, some of the sugars tend to stay in the mouth, encouraging germ activity in the mouth overnight. Instead, let the child eat a lot of raw salads- the fibre in the food helps to polish teeth and clean away residual food from the day.
