6 ways to alleviate Constipation in your child

Constipation seems to be an increasingly common problem in children these days. It is a common saying that, a growing child has such a fired up metabolism that it can even digest a piece of stone. In my experience it has not been true with my child! Our diets have evolved and moved away from whole grain products to over-processed and refined products that have lost all fibre and original nutrition and all that is left is the starch. Also, some children genetically have a weak gut (It runs in our family!!) Fibre is very critical in everybody’s diet to clean out the digestive tract and keep it healthy. Absence of fibre in a child’s diet results in chronic constipation, stomach pain, bloating with gas etc.  Here are a few ways to deal with this chronic problem:

1. Fibre Rich foods: Increase slowly, the proportion of fibre rich foods in the diet. Interestingly foods that are rich in fibre tend to have more minerals and vitamin content too. A food is considered to be a source of fibre if it has at least 2 gms of fibre per serving. Fruits and vegetables are a good source of fibre. Rajma, Chole, all other beans, sprouts, brown rice, whole grain atta, dried fruits, flaxseed (mix it in dosa batter, milkshakes , roti flour), peas, popcorn (try to avoid the microwaveable variety) are all useful in increasing the fibre content in your diet.

2. Water: One cannot stress more the importance of drinking water for a child prone to constipation- Set goals- fill bottles and put them on the dining table and insist they have to be finished by a certain time. Insist on your child returning from school with an empty water bottle.

3. Juice: If your child has a chronic constipation problem, give him/her a cup of homemade apple/pear/peach juice every day. They contain sorbitol which is a natural sugar found in certain fruits. Sorbitol has a natural laxative effect on the body.

4. Physical activity: Engage your child in some physical activity. If sports is not your child’s interest, then try dance or play Frisbee with your child. Try all options to get your child to run around.

5. Good old Dahi: A cup of homemade dahi every day will ensure that good bacteria stays in your child’s gut promoting digestion. A simple habit with a lifetime of good results.

6. Detox once a month: Giving your child castor oil orally once a month will clean out the gut and give it a fresh start. Castor Oil has laxative properties and therefore do not give it at night time to avoid accidents. If possible try and buy organic castor oil.

Gut health is one of the most important things that needs to be focused on in a child. Malabsorption of nutrients by a weak gut can result in poor growth and development. Incorporating these habits into your child’s life and making it a lifestyle change is important to deal with a problem as chronic as constipation.
