hisutism in kids and its natural cures- Easy Tips by ZenParent

If you have a daughter who is a tween or a teenager and has a lot of body hair, chances are she is already asking you how to get rid of it. Shaving can make the skin rough and waxing is painful. Hair removal creams have a lot of chemicals in them and it is not a good idea to put chemicals on the skin when they are that young. However, there are a few natural remedies that you can try to deal with facial and body hair for your child:

1. Up the Vitamin B6: Vitamin B6 has shown to help with hirsutism. Foods that are naturally rich in Vitamin B6 are Palak and other dark leafy greens, seeds, beans, dahi, avocados, sprouts, dried fruit and even dark chocolate! Consciously add these items to your diet. Also, you could consider a Vitamin B complex vitamin pill everyday for your child.

2. Pudina: A few studies have shown that the good old Pudina is great for reducing hair growth. We are lucky that in our Indian diet, we can include pudina in many ways in the form of chutney, rasam, paratta etc. You can also make a watery tea by steeping some pudina leaves and drinking it twice a day, but this can be a hard one for kids to drink. Add some lemon and honey to make it taste better.

3. Hormone balancing food: Hirsutism is caused by the imbalance of hormones in the body. Eating foods which are rich in phytoestrogen will balance out the excess testosterone. Foods that are rich in phytoestrogen are soy products like soy milk, tofu etc. Flax seeds are another good source. You can grind flax seeds and add them to cereal, roti flour or dosa batter or pretty much any vegetable because it is fairly tasteless- just a light nutty flavouring . Fennel or saunf is another source of phytoestrogen. Since it is also a great mouth freshener, you can get your teenager to make it a habit to munch on saunf after meals.

4. Skin care: Replace the soap with a powder of Turmeric (Wild/Aromatic turmeric, NOT cooking turmeric) and besan. Applying this everyday has been found to have the beneficial effect of reduced hair growth. Make a paste of lemon, sugar and honey (10:60:30) and scrub it on the arms and legs as a natural scrub that removes hair. Once a week, make a pack of turmeric, Besan and curd and apply it for 20 minutes on the face. Another face mask that works really well is one made with raw papaya and turmeric. Grind the papaya, mix in turmeric and apply to the face and leave it on for 20 minutes. Do this weekly or bi-weekly for good results.

Teenage is a tough phase where girls especially are hyper conscious of their looks. Sometimes this even impacts their self esteem. Share these tips with your child  so that she knows what is expected of her – natural remedies have no side effects however they require a much greater commitment to do it consistently unlike the quick fixes like shaving or hair removing chemicals. Finally do not forget to add that no matter what, it is the inner beauty of a woman that always shines through which is a combination of kindness and intelligence , which is completely free of cost 🙂
