The monsoon season is here and the incidence of ‘Pink eye’ or ‘Conjunctivitis’ increases this season. Conjunctivitis is a viral infection of the eye that causes redness, itching, inflammation and excessive secretions from the eye. Furthermore, it is also contagious, making it a real pesky problem. The sooner the problem is addressed, the faster conjunctivitis can be cleared up. Here are a few home remedies that you can follow as soon as you see the early symptoms.

1. Cold and Warm compresses: Soaking a clean piece of cloth in cold winter and placing it over the eye gives relief from the itching. A warm compress will help get the gunk off the eyelashes – this is especially good first thing in the morning when kids wake up with crusty eyelashes.

2. Black tea: Just place cool tea bags on the eyelids for 10 minutes, two to three times a day. You can also make a diluted tea and use it wash eyes with it. The tannin in tea soothe the irritation.

3. Salt solution: Mix a quarter spoon of sea salt in a cup of warm water. Apply it to the eye with a dropper.

4. Home Made yogurt: I am specific about homemade yogurt because store bought yogurt may not have ‘live culture’ of bacteria in it because they kill the culture to extend the shelf life of the product. Homemade yogurt with the live culture in it will combat the infection when applied on the eyes.

5. Garlic: Make a juice of garlic and apply it to the corners of the eye with the eyelids closed. The juice will seep into the eye. Repeat every hour.
